Day 22: Put your music on shuffle and post the first 10 songs

99494339-24FE-4318-AA5E-FB5FE7D36B5EI have a varied taste in music and I think having 2220 songs shows that variety. I put my iPod on shuffle without knowing what would turn up and thankfully it wasn’t anything too embarrassing though I will admit 32D008E7-0D60-4CA3-BCC8-73A8F9863BFDnumber 11 was the “Doctor Who” theme song.

MGMT – Weekend Wars
MGMT is the definition of guilty pleasure for my ears.
Icona Pop – I Love It (feat. Charli XCX)
This is one of those songs you here when watching your favorite show (in this case “Girls”) and can’t get the song out of your head. The solution becomes download the song and listen to it on repeat in an attempt to get it to stop making you hum the words you don’t even know. P.S. it didn’t work.
Black Veil Brides – F.E.A.R. Transmission 1: Stay Close
This isn’t really a song but one of four “F.E.A.R. Transmissions” that play on Black Veil Brides’ album Wretched and DE2BE4B0-E172-4CEE-99B6-715186B393E3Divine.
Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (D.R.U.G.S.) – The Hangman
I really loved this band’s album and was happy one of the songs appeared in the first 10 of this challenge. Seeing as each member came from a different Warped Tour success band it’s a blend of different elements from some of the great bands that came off that tour.
Nirvana – Son Of A Gun
I’ve been very vocal about my love for 4820FC27-64B4-4233-8525-432DCAD36906Nirvana and with the amount of their songs on my iPod it shouldn’t be shocking that one showed up to the challenge.
Foo Fighters – Breakout
Ironic that the song to play after Nirvana was Dave Grohl’s band after Nirvana ended. I’m not the biggest Foo Fighters fan but I did download their grates hits album because all the songs I do love were on it. Given Grohl’s recent injury during a show I think we can all agree he’s a true rock star who powered through a broken leg to finish the show.
Chris Isaak – Wicked Game
I’ve no excuse.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll
I dare you not to want to dance.
Dynamite Boy – I Want It That Way
Seeing as I grew up with boy bands and pop princesses but I can no longer stomach them this is the best alternative. the Punk Goes Pop album can be a mixture of funny and frankly better versions of the songs you grew up with.
The Verve – Weeping Willow
I love The Verve and I was so excited when they announced a new album all those years after their first. I think they’re understated and mellow which is perfect when you’re trying to relax but don’t want to listen to orchestras.

Day 7: List 10 songs that you’re loving right now

I really wish it could be twenty because frankly music is all but

Nirvana

Nirvana

1. School – Nirvana
I’ve talked about how I always return to Nirvana in a previous post and due to “Montage of Heck” I was reintroduced to some of my old favorites.

2. Red Right Hand – PJ Harvey
Unfortunately, I can’t find where to download this song so I must listen to it on YouTube. I first heard this song when watching the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” and when I went on a search to find the track title I found out PJ Harvey had done a cover of Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand” for the show “Peaky Blinders.”

3. Shut Up and Dance – WALK THE MOON
WALK THE MOON has a soft spot on my heart because I used their song “Anna Sun” when putting together photos and video of my nephew for his third birthday. This band is one of the few upbeat bands that I like.

4. Hold My Hand – UNKLE
This was one of those things where you find a song you like then creep through the band’s iTunes page. I found this song after hearing “The Dog Is Black” and wondering if UNKLE had any other weirdly catchy songs. Because this song was only available with the album, I bought the whole thing with no regrets. That’s how much I love this song.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey

5. Ultraviolence – Lana Del Rey
One of my friends introduced me to Lana Del Rey a few years back and I’ve loved her voice since. When her newest album came out, I couldn’t stop listening to the title track.

6. Cling – Modern Chemistry
I absolutely love the feeling of walking into a concert a fan of the headliner and walking away a fan of the supporting act. When frnkiero andthe cellabration came to Detroit with Modern Chemistry and The Homeless Gospel Choir as supporting acts I didn’t bother to look up the two bands I hadn’t heard before because I figured I would let the live show be my introduction. Both were great but Modern Chemistry stood out and I listen to this song almost every day.

7. Wasp – Motionless In White
Motionless in White I discovered a few years ago and have been following them in anticipation of new releases. When Reincarnate came out, “Wasp” was an instant favorite.

8. Spooky Action At A Distance – SQÜRL
As a student in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University and as a student in Midtown, Detroit, I had heard of the indie movie “Only Lovers Left Alive” and was attracted to the premise of a vampire hiding out in Detroit while making music. Director Jim Jarmusch and his band SQÜRL was responsible for the soundtrack and it’s mostly void of vocals and a blend of sounds but it works so amazingly well together and I can’t stop listening to this song.

Placebo

Placebo

9. Pure Morning – Placebo
Many of the bands I love will post on there Twitter or Instagram photos of seeing Placebo live or the Placebo albums they are listening to so I decided to check them out. This is by far my favorite.

10. Make it Home – thenewno2
First heard the remix to this song while watching “Beautiful Creatures” and loved it so much I bought the remix and the original version.

I don’t remember the specifics of the first time I heard them but they changed my musical interests indefinitely.

I was in fourth grade and my parents were having a home built for us to move into the coming summer. I don’t think I was too excited about it but I remember we would make the drive out to the new house frequently to see the progress. It was during those trips that my brother introduced me to my first rock band.

Nirvana.

I think my interest stemmed from being a little sister who wanted to love everything her older brother did. I listened to Nirvana CDs on a portable CD player in our Ford Focus, which would later become mine, while my brother was walking around the new house with my parents.

When he got his license and we would go adventuring, such as late night visits to the local Meijer to cure summer boredom, we would blare Nirvana. We were those rock kids that played their music too loud in a small town in the Midwest.

The older I became the more eclectic my tastes became, all within the umbrella of rock, but I always return to Nirvana not only for a sense of nostalgia but also the inescapable connection to the inner misfit.kurtcobain06

When I heard about “Montage of Heck” I was excited but apprehensive. I’m the nerd that watches documentaries and behind the scenes programs and had seen too many about frontman Kurt Cobain to count. I figured it would be like all the others; Kurt had a dissatisfying childhood, Kurt was on his own, Kurt became part of an internationally successful band, Kurt has drug problems, Kurt has a family, Kurt kills himself.

It gets real redundant, real quick.

Even though that is the basic story you still yearn for a more in-depth look at the man behind such profound music that truly shaped not only a generation but also music for generations to come.

I felt relieved when I found out Frances Bean Cobain, Cobain’s daughter, was a producer for “Montage of Heck.” How could it be typical if his legacy was involved? After reading an article in Rolling Stone magazine where Bean Cobain said she wanted people to see the true Cobain instead of what he has been perceived as, I was flat out excited for the documentary to come to HBO on May 4. Unfortunately, being a working college student I was at work and had to play catch-up and watch “Montage of Heck” on HBO Go the following Wednesday.

I was amazed. I think the puzzle pieces that many fans felt were missing to the complex character of an icon were finally revealed. Maybe they weren’t completely put into place but at least we know they exist. Old home movies, interviews, photographs and recordings served as a great background to the interviews with Cobain’s parents, stepmother, sister, ex-girlfriend, former band member, and widow. Orchestral instruments cover hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “All Apologies” clash against raw recordings of Cobain writing songs and playing with the recorder. Animations fill in where photos and videos cannot reach to illustrate the words narrated by Kurt, including a scene where Cobain and “friends” would distract a, by Cobain’s preferred description “quiet,” girl while one of the friends would steal alcohol out of her basement.

Animation filled in the gaps in "Montage of Heck."

Animation filled in the gaps in “Montage of Heck.”

It’s not all a pretty and a romanticized tale of small town misfit to global admiration.

Heroin plays a title role in the documentary beginning roughly halfway through. Some footage shows a visibly high Cobain holding baby Frances while wife Courtney Love cuts her hair for the first time. Love admits in the documentary to doing heroin while pregnant and assuring Cobain that the baby would be fine. News clippings from different organizations show stories printed about Bean Cobain being born as a drug addict, Child Protective Services stepping in and taking Bean Cobain at only a few weeks old and the Cobain regaining custody of her. These clippings are filed in between home videos of the Cobains playing with their young daughter and acting as if there was not a world outside their home.

Die-hard Nirvana fans know how the story ends but the flow of “Montage of Heck” gives you hope it will end differently. Instead of using old news footage and police photos, a black background with white font appears on the screen proclaiming Cobain’s suicide.

Pain is a funny thing. Some people feel they need to feel it in order to live and others find ways to escape the feel of it. “Montage of Heck” is an essential documentary not only for Nirvana fans but also music enthusiasts looking for a cool and emotional look at one of music’s most influential icons.
