Day 30: Your highs and lows for the month

Well, this is the end of the road for this challenge.

I can honestly say I had some fun with this. I’m not joking when I saw I had low expectations for this challenge seeing as I have a tendency to forget things easily and I had a strong feeling I’d be skipping posts. Thankfully, I did every post on time and finished all 30 days.

Michael Scott, "The Office"

Michael Scott, “The Office”

Most of the lows came from moments of writer’s block or trying to find the best videos to link to songs and trailers. Seeing as I’ve been using WordPress for a while, I’m used to the format of the posts and how to use the settings.

I experienced a great deal of highs. Sometimes it was watching my mom try to figure out what would be in the daily post and other times it was typing furiously trying to finish before I fell asleep on my keyboard. I had fun doing this and even more fun seeing people “Like” a post because someone other than family and myself were getting something out of the challenge. One writer even asked if she could steal the idea to which I responded I stole it from another blogger via Google Images.

I think by ding a writing challenge helps you remind yourself who you are in a time when your head is spinning from work, school and reality. I’ll probably do another challenge at some point in a few months but for now I’ll focus on blogging about projects I’m working on or things going on around the world.

See ya writing challenge, it’s been real.

Here’s a hint: soon there will a post about the big equal rights victory from last week.

Day 29: What are your goals for the nest 30 days?

If I had been doing this writing challenge during the school year, this post would be very different. From the last week of August to the first week of May, I typically have a pretty clear plan for my week. I usually seek out ways to balance my work and school assignments, then look for ways to feed my little to non-existent social life and finally when I can nap. Even during breaks I have to search for time to see friends that are returning for the holidays and I don’t really sleep while in school; I just take long naps.

I think for the next 30 days I’m going to play it by ear.

Keira Knightley, "Pride & Prejudice"

It’s nice not having to worry about sleeping through my alarm and possibly being late for class. It’s nice not having to worry about my friends leaving for school within the next two weeks so there’s no pressure to find the time to all get together. One of my friends is coming home from a month in France and London so I can’t wait to get together with her to hear the stories and see the pictures.

I don’t have a clear set of goals to accomplish other than to rest and mentally prepare for another school year of balancing work, assignments and friends.

And I’ll get as much sleep as possible now seeing as it will be a myth once school starts back up again.

Day 11: Something you always think “what if” about

Done sometime in my second or third year of college.

Done sometime in my second or third year of college.

I have a strong passion for art. In a recent discussion board post in my new media theory class my professor had mentioned art as her first true love and contemporary art was her first true lust. In my response that week I ended it with art being my first true love and Baroque/Romanticism was my first true lust.

It should be no surprise I wanted to go art school.

I’ve always been drawn to drawing and painting and used to spend hours in our basement working on various pieces in various mediums and dreamed of selling my work someday.

When I started high school, I began looking into different art schools. I didn’t exactly want to go to one of the Art Institutes and I knew I wanted to look into schools in a city setting. I had lowered it down to two; the School of Visual Arts in New York City and Columbia College in Chicago.

I was excited to get my portfolio together. I was a sophomore in high school and figured I would start early to have my best pieces together. It was during that time that I had a harsh realization with myself.

I was a terrible professional but an amazing hobbyist.

I had my strengths and weaknesses but decided to save myself the heartache of being told I wasn’t good enough not only to get into an art school but also to make a career out of it. It was a sad moment, yes, but necessary.

Now, many years after that Sopranos-style sit down I had with myself, I still am left wondering “what if” I had just gone for it and applied to art school. Would I have gotten accepted or rejected?

Guess I’ll just have to stick with the “what if.”
