Summer coffee tricks

As a student taking a break for the summer I find myself consuming chilled caffeine concoctions at an alarming rate. A quick look at my Instagram reveals quite a few references to my wonderful sidekick, coffee, and all the nifty mugs I drink from. But, one thing many people tend to forget is coffee is like a potato; there are so many different things you can do with it.

  1. Iced Coffee

Iced Coffee

I’m not talking about running to your local coffee shop and getting a plastic cup filled with ice and having coffee poured over top. Stay at home! One of the bad things about ice coffee is it gets diluted as the ice melts and your rich dark roast has suddenly turned into the free coffee at school functions. A delicious trick to avoiding this is to mix your coffee however you like (for ice coffee I prefer flavored creamer or milk) and pour it into an ice try. Let it freeze for at least six hours (though overnight works best) and pop a few cubes into a glass. Pour your roast over the coffee cubes and you are left with a refreshing ice coffee that won’t taste like it came out of your faucet.

  1. Coffee Ice Pops

For a few years, I have noticed a growing trend of making ice pops at home instead of buying them in the frozen food section at the grocery store. You can buy an ice pop mold for anywhere between $8-$20 on Amazon.com. Brew your favorite roast and doctor it the way you please (I will say, if you’re like me and prefer black coffee, you need to put something into it because black coffee tastes terrible frozen) and pour into the ice pop molds. It’s works best if you leave roughly a quarter of an inch of space from the top. If you fill to the brim you run the risk of having the lids pop off as it freezes. Let them freeze over night or at least eight hours. Run over warm water and take lids off. The ice pops will come out smoothly and you’re left with a cool caffeine riddled treat.

  1. Coffee Float

I realize an essential part of having a traditional “float” is the deliciously carbonated root beer that foams around the ice cream but humor me for a second. If you scoop vanilla ice cream into a glass and pour warm coffee (not blazingly hot) you get the same effect. The ice cream melts a bit and you get the satisfaction of a cool coffee flavored ice cream drink.

  1. Coffee Shake

Similar to a coffee float but not. The good thing about a coffee shake is you don’t need to add milk. All you need is a blender, some chocolate or vanilla ice cream and coffee. Don’t use coffee flavored ice cream because it can be over powering and frankly it takes the fun out of everything. Add at least two scoops of your desired ice cream and two cups of (cooled) coffee (really, just add coffee to taste) and blend. If it’s too thick add more coffee, if it’s too watery then add more ice cream. Add a striped straw because it makes everything more festive.

Stay cool and caffeinate!

Day 3: what are your top three pet peeves?

Definition of pet peeve from Google.

Definition of pet peeve from Google.

I feel like things that make me angry and things that are just classified as pet peeves often cross each other’s paths. Here are the top three pet peeves/things that make me angry.

Beeping

I do believe this is why I view my alarm clock as my one true foe. I’m not sure when this hatred started but anytime I heard something beeping, I give it a few seconds and if it continues I find myself searching for the problem and squashing it like an unwanted spider.

Drama

Of course I mean the sort of thing that goes on between a few high immature people and not the sort of thing you see on a theater’s stage. One of the reasons I am very selective about the people I friend on Facebook is because I hate seeing drama unfold on my timeline. Seriously, who cares?

Uneven numbers

This could be a nod to a more OCD side of me (which I don’t have just to clarify) but when I’m doing things, I prefer them to be in even numbers. I think it’s because I like pairs. A weird example is when I’m eating a snack food such as almonds. I’ve noticed within the passed year that anytime I eat almonds I put two in my mouth at once and if I am left with a single almond at the end of the bowl I stare at it with contempt. Why? No clue. I like things I can buy in packs of two or four, things that can be stacked in fours and things that can be lined in even rows. Anytime I am faced with an odd number, I cringe.

I guess I could be described as a borderline OCD, mellow and alarm hating college student.

Day 2: write something that someone told you about yourself that you never forgot

My friend Liz and I met in our News Editing class a few years ago and she’s become a sort of campus mother to not only myself but also many in the journalism department. One day during the Fall 2014 semester she told me something no one had ever told me and I was flattered, thankful and taken aback.

“You do Goth beautifully.” She said. Her comment stemmed from seeing my Facebook posts about Halloween and my mother and I’s costumes for my favorite holiday. We switched personalities and many found it funny seeing as she is the Doris Day to my Wednesday Addams and we couldn’t be anymore different in the style department.

Ironically, one of the weekend radio programs Liz listened to had a segment that Sunday involving either Goth fashion/style or how Goth has evolved over the years. I’m not sure which it was but she told me she thought of me as she was listening and said she feels many people have a more loud or gaudy or even gimmicky approach to Goth style but, in her opinion, I do Goth beautifully.

This may seems small potatoes to people who grew up in a place where you could have the freedom of open expression and didn’t feel the pressure to fit in with everyone else. I’ve mentioned plenty of times the small town I was raised in and it’s hard to find your place when everyone dresses and acts the same. Being the person wondering down the hallways of a high school in all black when everyone is in pastel Hollister and highlights gets challenging. There is a thrill but it gets old being the only one brave enough not to dress as everyone else.

I had always hated the thought of being another brick in the wall.

It’s funny how such a simple statement can make you feel so great about yourself and relieved that at least someone else out there appreciates your sense of self.
